QNX Software Systems Kicks Off Its Silver Anniversary
This week at Embedded World Germany in Nuremberg, QNX Software Systems celebrated 25 years as a global technology leader. QNX cofounder and CEO Dan Dodge marked the event with a keynote speech that looked ahead to "Embedded Operating Systems: The Next Ten Years." Says Dodge, "When we created QNX, we set out to build software that would 'make a difference' and wound up laying the technology cornerstone for the products of thousands of other companies and for millions of embedded devices around the world."

Just some of the highlights noted from the past 25 years include:

Launched in 1980, QNX has become a global technology leader, providing ultra-reliable software for millions of mission-critical systems worldwide.
Companies such as Cisco, DaimlerChrysler, General Electric, Intel, Lockheed Martin, Renesas, and Siemens rely on QNX technology every day.

QNX Hires Cisco Executive Charles Eagan as Vice President of Research and Development

QNX Software Systems announced the appointment of former Cisco executive Charles Eagan as vice president of research and development. Eagan joins QNX after his tenure at Cisco Systems, where he led the software development of the Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing System and other key projects in the Carrier Core Multi Service Business Unit. Eagan, a 20-year veteran of the software and hardware industry, will be responsible for all QNX research and development activities, including software development and quality assurance. Eagan's extensive engineering experience and proven leadership at Cisco will make him a major driver of QNX's ongoing commitment and success in the networking market.

Dedicated Systems Experts Releases New QNX Neutrino v6.3 Reports

Dedicated Systems Experts just released their reports on QNX Neutrino v6.3. This evaluation tested QNX® Neutrino® RTOS on a Windows host environment and a PowerPC/Sandpoint target. Once again, QNX Neutrino received top marks in such key categories as architecture, test results, OS configuration, documentation, and support.

Dedicated Systems Experts described QNX Neutrino as having "excellent architecture for a distributed and robust system" and found "very fast and predictable performance" throughout the evaluation. In addition, they called QNX Neutrino "one of the best documented RTOSs on the market." The reports are available in two PDF documents.

QNX Accelerates Networking Development with Support for Freescale PowerQUICC III 8560ADS Reference Platform

QNX Software Systems offers a board support package (BSP) that combines the reliability and scalability of the QNX Neutrino RTOS with the high performance of the Freescale PowerQUICC III 8560ADS reference platform, a board powered by the Freescale MPC8560 processor. By integrating QNX Neutrino and the Freescale PowerQUICC III 8560ADS reference platform, the BSP provides networking and communications designers with a complete, off-the-shelf package to jump-start system development and reduce time-to-market.

SPOTLIGHT: Silicon Turnkey Express (STx)

Silicon Turnkey Express (STx) is the original design manufacturer (ODM) division of RPC Electronics, an electronics manufacturing service (EMS) provider in Ohio. Through STx, RPC also offers contract design manufacturing (CDM) services.

STx and QNX Software Systems share a number of semiconductor partners. In the networking arena, QNX Software Systems and STx have jointly delivered the world's first RapidIO development platform. Based on the STx GP3 board for the Freescale PowerQUICC3 MPC8560 and the Tundra Semiconductor TSi500 HIP2 reference card, the development platform provides developers with the ability to rapidly prototype RapidIO systems. QNX Neutrino, with its transparent distributed processing capability, provides a proven interprocess communication capability, a fundamental requirement needed to leverage the full benefits of RapidIO.

QNX, COMET Extend Telematics Partnership into Europe

QNX Software Systems, the global leader in operating system technology for the in-car telematics and infotainment market, announced its continued leadership and participation with COMET™ (Community Enabling Telematics) as the consortium expands into Europe. A founding member of COMET, QNX was also the first realtime operating system (RTOS) provider to join the Renesas Technology-led consortium and has since been an active COMET partner in the U.S. market. As a founding consortium partner, QNX extends its participation to COMET's expansion into Europe, where QNX has a strong foothold of success, particularly among German automakers.

Tridium Standardizes on QNX Neutrino Realtime Operating System

QNX Software Systems announced that Tridium Inc., a leader in software for realtime control applications, has standardized on the QNX Neutrino RTOS and QNX Momentics® development suite for its flagship NiagaraAX Framework platform. QNX Neutrino will be the sole operating system to power the company's full product line, including the JACE embedded controllers and Niagara OEM runtimes. By making the strategic decision to standardize on QNX Neutrino, Tridium will provide its customers with enhanced realtime control, greater reliability, and support for advanced web services at the device level, while accelerating software development to deliver new versions of the Niagara Framework to market quicker.

QNX, FET Simplify Configuration and Deployment of High-Performance RapidIO Systems

QNX Software Systems and Fabric Embedded Tools Corporation today announced that the RapidFET™ diagnostic tool is now available for networking and communications systems based on RapidIO and the QNX Neutrino RTOS. Designed to discover and enumerate complex RapidIO designs with the push of a button, RapidFET combines a graphical interface with powerful diagnostic capabilities, allowing engineers to quickly isolate faults and optimize system behavior.

Making the Switch to RapidIO

QNX Software Engineer, Sheridan Ethier, will be presentating "Application-Driven Power Management for In-Car Telematics and Infotainment Systems." Compared to PDAs, notebooks, and other general-purpose mobile devices, in-car telematics systems present a host of unique power management requirements. They must, for instance, deal with custom hardware, deliver predictable response times while in low-power states, and maintain operational readiness for days or weeks after the ignition has been turned off.
