   SPECIAL FEATURE

QNX Powers Cisco's Universal Media Gateway for Next-generation Digital Video Networks

QNX Software Systems recently announced that the QNX® Neutrino® realtime operating system (RTOS) will be shipping as part of the Cisco uMG9850 QAM Module, a new quadrature amplitude modulation product designed to let cable operators use Gigabit Ethernet to deliver video-on-demand and other multimedia services efficiently and cost-effectively to TV set-top receivers. Data-centric video processing has precise timing requirements, making it an ideal application for the hard realtime capabilities of the QNX Neutrino RTOS. With its preemptible microkernel and priority-based preemptive scheduler, the QNX Neutrino RTOS delivers response times that are both fast and highly predictable. High-priority programs can meet their deadlines on time, every time, even under heavy processor loads.

   PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

QNX Closes TCP Vulnerability to Denial-of-service Attacks

As part of an ongoing commitment to provide customers with products of the highest quality, QNX Software Systems has addressed a recently announced security threat arising from a vulnerability in the TCP specification. By taking advantage of advanced disclosure, QNX Software Systems was able to work closely with industry- leading companies to resolve this vulnerability in a timely fashion. Details of the draft IETF RFC solution can be found at
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-tcpm-tcpsecure-00.txt.

The TCP vulnerability, identified by the NISCC Vulnerability Advisory 236929, arising from a flaw in the original TCP specification, can leave any networked device open to denial of service attacks. Denial of service attacks can impact legitimate users of a service that use TCP/IP as the method of communication. This vulnerability is most likely to affect long-lived TCP connections such as routing protocols.

Additional information is available at

QNX Showcases Hardware-accelerated Security Stacks on Freescale Semiconductor's PowerQUICC Processors

QNX Software Systems recently announced that its comprehensive suite of pre-integrated protocol stacks now supports IKE, RADIUS, SSH, and SSL, as well as other advanced security features. Running on the QNX Neutrino RTOS v6.3, the new additions leverage the powerful security engine on selected PowerQUICCTM processors from Freescale Semiconductor, a wholly owned subsidiary of Motorola Inc., to deliver highly optimized encryption and authentication for next-generation network elements.

Web Seminar Download: Optimizing Performance in Embedded Applications Using System Tracing Tools

If you missed the live QNX web seminar, "Optimizing Performance In Embedded Applications Using System Tracing Tools," you can now download the archive version. During this technical session QNX Software Systems examined how system tracing tools can be used to gain critical insight into system behavior. OS tools manager Thomas Fletcher provided an overview of tracing and instrumentation and how these techniques can be used to identify bottlenecks and correct system errors. Software developer Colin Burgess then presented a case study on using system tracing tools to optimize performance in an in-vehicle system with tight timing requirements and limited CPU resources. Mr. Burgess looked at areas such as startup sequence, component streamlining, misinterpreted specifications, and resource contention.

Case Study Download: Using System Tracing to Improve Packet Forwarding Performance

This case study demonstrates the use of a trace analysis tool, the system profiler in the QNX Momentics® development suite, to uncover hidden bottlenecks in an SMP system. For the case, we'll review results from a benchmark study that measures Layer 3 packet forwarding, using a test system based on the QNX Neutrino RTOS and Broadcom's SiByte BCM1250 dual-processor SOC.
